"Darkness Cornered" synopsis:

Lear King is one of thousands in the latest chain of human evolution: vampyres. They were normal people--until a mass genetic change took place for unknown reasons, heightening certain natural traits (photosensitivity, accelerated cell regeneration, and lower body core temperature). Titled the V-mutation, scientists struggled to find out why, but failed, and as more people exhibited the mutated traits, they adapted, learning to live completely at night. For the most part, Lear's life is pretty normal; though darkness is all he's ever known, he is a detective with the VAPD and is in a loving relationship with the light of his life, Kai Green; who also happens to be one of the last few 'normals.'

But there are a few scientists who don't want to give up. Dr. Maddox Corvan, the head of the Department of Scientific Research, is certain that the V-mutation is a disease, and will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of it. Even tracking down the remaining “normals” and performing macabre experiments upon them under the reputable guise of his station.

 

Dr. Corvan, frustrated after his last experiments go haywire, locates Kai, and pins her as his next victim. But there’s just one problem.

 

Lear.

 

Corvan’s men neglect to dispatch Lear in the chaos of Kai’s abduction, and he sets out to reclaim the one thing in his life that really mattered. In the end, it comes down to one question: is love worth sacrificing yourself for?
